FAQ

Everything you're wondering, before you start.

How it works, what it costs, and why your practice stays completely private.

What is Dryrun?
Dryrun is a practice space for hard conversations. You tell us what conversation you're dreading — asking for a raise, ending a relationship, confronting a friend — and you roleplay it with a custom persona that plays the other person. You get to fumble, restart, and try different approaches before it counts.
How does it actually work?
You describe the conversation and the person you'll be talking to: who they are, how they typically react, what makes this hard. Dryrun takes on that role and responds the way they realistically might — including pushback, deflection, or getting defensive. You practice out loud or by text, as many times as you want. Between runs, you can tell Dryrun what was off — "he'd never apologize that fast," "she'd bring up money sooner" — and the persona adjusts before the next round.
Is this therapy?
No. Dryrun is a rehearsal tool, not a substitute for therapy, coaching, or professional advice. If you're working through something heavy, we're a great complement to those things — a place to practice what you and your therapist talked about — but not a replacement for them.
Won't practicing with an app feel fake?
The point isn't a perfect imitation of your boss or your mom. It's that saying hard things out loud for the first time is the worst part — and right now, most people do that first rep in the real conversation, with real stakes. Dryrun moves that first (and second, and fifth) rep somewhere safe. The awkwardness burns off in practice instead of in the moment that matters.
How realistic is the roleplay?
Realistic enough to make you sweat a little — and it gets more realistic every round. The persona is built from your description: their communication style, their likely objections, their sore spots. After each run, you give feedback on what didn't ring true, and the persona sharpens. By your third or fourth run, it's responding uncomfortably like the real person. You can also adjust the difficulty: start with a receptive version and work your way up to worst-case-scenario mode.
Is what I share private?
Yes. Your scenarios and practice sessions are yours. We don't sell your data, we don't share your conversations with anyone, and your sessions are never used for model training. You can delete any session at any time, and deleted sessions are permanently removed.
Can the person I'm practicing about find out?
No. Nothing in Dryrun is visible to anyone but you. There's no social feed, no sharing by default, no notifications sent to anyone.
What kinds of conversations can I practice?
Anything you're putting off. Common ones: salary negotiations, giving hard feedback at work, setting boundaries with family, breakups, apologies, confronting a roommate or friend, job interviews, and "we need to talk" conversations of every variety.
What does it cost?
Every new account starts with 3 free roleplays, no credit card required. After that, you buy packs of roleplays: 6 for $14, 12 for $26, or 18 for $36. There's no subscription, and roleplays never expire. Full details are on the pricing page.
Do I need to talk out loud, or can I type?
Both work. Typing is lower-pressure and great for figuring out what to say. Speaking out loud is closer to the real thing and better for practicing how to say it. Most people start with text and graduate to voice.
What if I freeze up or say the wrong thing?
That's the whole point. Freeze, ramble, say the thing you'd regret — then hit restart. Every bad take in Dryrun is one you didn't spend in real life.
How many times can I practice the same conversation?
As many as you need — and repetition is where Dryrun does its best work. After each run, you refine the persona and the scene based on what felt off, so every round gets closer to real life while you get more comfortable in it. Most conversations feel noticeably easier by the third or fourth run. You'll know you're ready when neither the words nor the other person's reactions surprise you anymore.
